zip drive/zip disk
Reviews The Zip drive was similar to the standard floppy-disk drive, but the disks were much thicker and able to store 100MB or 250MB of data. Developed by Iomega, the Zip drive and its corresponding Zip disks were popular in the late 1990s.

Buffalo LinkStation Pro review
Reviews One of the best ways of creating regular backups is with an external hard disk or network-attached storage device. The 250GB version costs in the region of £140, which is around twice as much as an ordinary external USB hard disk.

Canon MV930 review
Reviews Opting for a MiniDV-based camcorder might seem like an odd choice given that a range of hard-disk and DVD camcorders are starting to appear on the scene. If you can resist the magpie allure of the new DVD and hard-disk models, the MV930 is a bargain.

Which types of drives do I need?
Reviews This magnetic disk provides you with space to save programs and files indefinitely -- or at least for the life of the drive. The hard disk's rotational speed also makes a big difference; a 5400rpm notebook disk delivers significantly faster...

Sony Handycam HDR-SR5E review
Reviews With its £500 street price, HD video support, hard-disk-based recording and Sony provenance, the Handycam HDR-SR5E certainly seems like a bargain. On the left side of the gripping ridge formed by the hard disk enclosure is the NightShot switch.

RAID (redundant array of independent disks)
Reviews A hard drive subsystem that provides convenient, low-cost and highly reliable storage by saving data on more than one disk simultaneously. To save disk space, RAID-3, -4, and -5 stripe, or distribute, data and parity information across multiple...

BNI Mediabox review
Reviews USB hard disks are ten a penny, but it's not every hard disk that will plug straight into a TV and play video, audio and photos. It is, after all, a hard disk and you don't get less glamorous than that.

Best flash MP3 players
Reviews So you've decided you want a skip-free, flash-based MP3 player instead of a hard disk-based device. If the most important feature for you is video playback, you'd probably be better off with a hard-disk player.

JVC GR-D240 review
Reviews Hard-disk based camcorders are the toast of gadget addicts everywhere at the moment, but we've still yet to come across one that beats MiniDV camcorders like this GZ-D240 for picture quality. Of course, the colour quality of the D240 can't match...

Panasonic SDR-H250 review
Reviews As a hard disk camcorder, the H250 is smaller than MiniDV or DVD rivals, but it's not especially light, thanks to the shock-absorbing gel that surrounds its 30GB hard drive. This is Panasonic's first hard disk model, and it's hoping that by...

Hitachi DZ-HS300E review
Reviews Hitachi's goal of an inexpensive camcorder, combining the long recording times and stability of a hard disk drive with the easy playback and distribution of a DVD, merits attention. Its one-touch dubbing from the 8GB hard disk to the internal...

JVC Everio GZ-MG57 review
Reviews Released in September 2006 with little fanfare, the JVC Everio GZ-MG57 seems to do nothing more than fill a hole in JVC's hard-disk camcorder lineup. As you'd expect from a hard-disk-based model, it starts up relatively quickly.

Cowon Q5W review
Reviews Cowon's new Q5W is a hard disk-boasting, Wi-Fi-capable, touchscreen-rocking, Windows-powered, codec-loving metallic behemoth. If only there was a 160GB hard disk option available we'd be absolutely over the moon.

JVC Everio GZ-MG20 review
Reviews As with all hard-disk camcorders, the small chassis means that you naturally find a good grip. Like these camcorders, the MG20 is hard disk-based. However, unlike the MC range, the MG models have fixed hard disks that cannot be removed from the...
