lossy compression
Reviews A method of file compression in which some data in the original file is lost when the compressed file is restored. The advantage of lossy compression is that it reduces the size of the file (partly by by eliminating redundant data), so the...

Toshiba SD-150E review
Reviews You can fit about eight to ten albums on one CD in a compressed audio format, which should be more than enough for an evening's entertainment. Fast becoming a requirement for budget DVD players is DivX playback -- a compressed format that has...

Denon S-101 review
Reviews Denon is a company that waxes lyrical about audio fidelity, and the compressed MP3 and AAC music stored on your iPod isn't what its engineers would play, if they had any say in the matter. That's why the S-101 houses a number of audio processors...

Archos AV700 review
Reviews First of all, DivX files tend to be highly compressed, and look like VHS quality on a large TV. The resolution on the AV700 is low, so even though video is compressed when it is recorded from a TV source, the compression isn't very noticeable.

Klipsch Image sound-isolating earphones review
Reviews If you generally find you can pick out the MP3-compressed song from the lossless FLAC version, you might find your job is harder through the Images, as their weaker abilities in the treble allows a lossily- compressed song to slip through without...

Nikon D700 review
Reviews D-Lighting; Vignette control, a rather annoying multiple exposure option that resets to Off after every batch and requires a trip into the menu system to turn back on, and raw file options of 12- or 14-bit with lossy compressed, lossless...

Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 review
Reviews Unlike Canon's spatially compressed -- that is, lower resolution -- sRaw, however, Sony's cRaw uses lossless compression to shrink file size from about 18MB to 12MB. Like the 40D, Sony supplies a compressed raw format, cRaw, designed for faster raw...

DivX
Reviews A compressed video format based on the MPEG 4 standard that enables a feature-length movie to fit on a CD-ROM. The term was coined by the hacking community to make fun of DivX, a failed pay-per-view scheme for DVD movies.

ATRAC3 (Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding 3)

Hercules DJ Console Rmx review
Reviews The Rmx is a DJ mixing desk that's designed to be connected to a PC or Mac via USB and used with DJing software to mix MP3 and other compressed music formats. When even big-name DJs like Pete Tong and Sasha start dropping vinyl in favour of MP3s...

Ogg Vorbis
Reviews Many focus groups claim that music files compressed by the Ogg Vorbis codec (extension: OGG) sound better than those created with commercial codecs. This is an open-source codec, meaning (among other things) that no one has to pay licensing fees...

Klipsch iGroove SXT review
Reviews Speaker systems for the iPod are among the most popular of the so-called podcessories, and thanks to the popularity of music in heavily compressed formats, cheap and low-quality speakers are plentiful.

Canon HV10 review
Reviews For the uninitiated, the HD video (HDV) format records compressed hi-def video onto standard MiniDV tapes. Canon puts high-definition video recording in your pocket, although to make room in said pocket requires removing more than £800 from it.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
Reviews PNGs also support progressive rendering, as interlaced GIFs do, and tend to compress better than GIFs (when the compressed file is decompressed for viewing, it retains all of the graphics information of the original).

Canon EOS 350D review
Reviews While this might appeal to the small handed and nimble, the EOS 350D's compressed, lightweight, and slightly chintzy frame will be a hindrance to others who prefer a solid grip and a balanced camera body -- particularly if they're using a lens any...
