Crave We've hit the studio for the 56th time to bring you another stonking episode of the Crave Podcast. In The Trial this week, camera expert Rich T claims Photoshopped images undermine the art and integrity of photography -- an opinion not shared by...

Make me over: Paint Shop Pro X
Crave For the rich and attractive, there is Photoshop (costing several billion pounds). Like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro's greatest skill is in retouching digital photographs. For the aspirational, there is Paint Shop Pro X (£85, or £41 for an upgrade).

Online image editors for blogging: Reviewed and rated
Crave Formerly Fauxto, Splashup looks very much like Photoshop. Image-editing behemoths such as Photoshop are clearly overpowered for this kind of grunt-work, especially when opening such programs involves launching it and then heading off for a three...

And out of the darkness there came: Adobe Lightroom
Crave Apple wowed digital photographers earlier in the year with its lightbox software, Aperture, but sub-par RAW conversion algorithms meant that few were persuaded to part with Photoshop. It roughly matches the RAW conversion in Photoshop.

Wacom Graphire Bluetooth: the pen is pointier than the mouse
Crave Our resident Photoshop geek was keen to try the Graphire Bluetooth, but was mildly disappointed. However, I only ever use Photoshop for manipulating photos, where very precise control of the pointer is less crucial.

Mary's Christmas shopping: pocket fillers
Crave I'll spend it on a book with an absurdly long title, Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers: A Professional Image Editor's Guide to the Creative Use of Photoshop for the Macintosh and PC (£28 from Amazon, a groovy rubber duck (£7 from Totally Funky...

Chris's Christmas shopping: Apple Power Mac quad-core G5
Crave My first choice is the quad-core Apple Power Mac G5.Some computers are fast, others are raging demons of hell-fulled anger that blister through Photoshop tasks like US soldiers taking out Vietnamese jungle.

Open-source software rated: Ten alternatives you need
Crave It's been in production for 12 years and is compatible with most of the commonly used image formats such as JPG, TIFF, PNG, BMP and GIF, as well as most Adobe Photoshop and PaintShop Pro files. You should care because the vast majority of common...

HiTi Photoprinter in action
Crave Images benefited from a 'sharpen more' filter in Photoshop to bring out the detail in some areas, and tweaking the brightness and contrast to bring out deeper colours also helped. We put the HiTi Photoprinter through its paces this morning.

Apple launches Aperture and new G5s: Let's feast!
Crave Although Photoshop has had RAW file support for a while now, this has always had the feel of an add-on, rather than an integral part of the program. Big White is at it again -- while other companies would be content with updating the world's most...

Optimus Pultius: Mini-OLED keyboard for big spenders
Crave you can attach the Pultius to your keyboard -- Maximus or otherwise -- and you'll be able to launch certain applications quickly or use some Photoshop shortcuts without memorising the key combinations.

Crave Talk: Teachers demand stop to YouTube hate campaigns
Crave Pupils with camera phones can easily create elaborate Photoshop montages where a teacher's head is superimposed onto the body of a naked woman dancing the Lambada. Bullying used to be a strictly kid-on-kid affair, but with the advent of camera...

Flickr and Picnik: Online photo editing made even easier
Crave Paint.NET and Gimp continue to be mentioned as viable online -- and free -- alternatives to Photoshop. It's all go at Flickr at the moment. Having just tweaked their maps and launched a new uploader application for beta testing, the popular photo...

Tablets: still hard to swallow?
Crave Installing Photoshop and taking this Compaq on the road as a sketchbook is the one truly ingenious use we can think of for it. We've always been strangely attracted to Tablet PCs -- perhaps from some dim memory of our childhood Etch-a-Sketch.

Nikon D80: Gold! Always believe in your dSLR
Crave We'd rather download the original images to our computers and work on them in Photoshop, but maybe these features will be useful when you're travelling. The 70s was the kitschy decade that taste forgot, but in the 80s it all got so much worse.
