Studio in a box: Yamaha AW1600
Crave No longer are studios filled with racks of hot valves, reams of tape and mop-haired engineers who wander off every quarter of an hour to eat Smarties. Gone are the days when recording a band on sixteen tracks meant booking Abbey Road.

Canon Selphy ES1: Suitcase meets toaster meets printer
Crave You carry the Selphy ES1 like a suitcase, the cable retracts like the power cable on your vacuum cleaner, the cartridge slots into the side like a tape going into a VCR (remember them? and the output pops out the top like toast from your toaster.

First Look: Hitachi DZ-MV580E DVD CAM
Crave Someone, or something, had salivated (or similar) onto the blank DVD-R bundled with the camera, causing the Hitachi to reject the disc -- not a problem we've ever had with tape based cameras. The idea of a camcorder which records video straight to...

Sharp Aquos LC-37XD1E: Game on
Crave This wasn't entirely due to our excited fumbling as Sharp delivered this TV in, well, we've never before seen packing tape this tough: it appeared to be made of transparent titanium gripping vines. Whenever a 1080p television comes into the Crave...

The world's smallest 3CCD camcorder?
Crave A CCD is the part of a camcorder that converts the light information coming through the lens into digital information before it’s written to tape. This is the NV-GS150, which Panasonic claims is 'the world’s smallest 3 CCD camcorder'.

Would you like a hard drive with that?
Crave JVC is now selling three Everio camcorders that use 4Gb removable microdrives instead of tape. The humble hard drive used to be the least interesting part of your computer, only getting attention when it was (a) full or (b) broken.

LG Flatron W2242S: Budget 22-inch monitor
Crave The monitor itself isn't hyper-sexy, though -- it's sort of.monitor-shaped, has a reasonably thin silver bezel, and a blue LED that's so bright you might want to cover it with masking tape if you use it at night.

Sagem DTR 64160: Pretty cheap, but not all that pretty
Crave But we'll overlook that, because you can always put some masking tape over it. We have to admit, we haven't been massive fans of Sagem PVRs in the past: a high price tag and tacky styling really didn't endear them to us.

Rewinding the Sony Walkman
Crave Unfortunately it looks like Apple have beaten Sony to becoming a generic name for the MP3 player -- the Walkman brand is still irrevocably associated with the cassette tape. We’d been wondering for a while whether Sony's NW-HD3 Network Walkman...

Canon MV930: Relentless eye
Crave You yourself are catalogued by timecode and stored on reams of magnetic tape -- sitcom character to a security guard spilling Hobnob crumbs onto a sweat-sodden copy of Heat magazine. If you're like us, then nothing makes you happier than consumer...

LG's TX Express and T1 Express laptops leave us giddy
Crave We weren't allowed near it with our tape measure and benchmark software, but apparently it's only 23mm thin, and will last around 8 hours with an extended 6-cell battery. Providing a break from the plethora of mobile phones at CeBIT 2006, LG...

Canon XH G1 and XH A1: Fresh new little HD piggies
Crave These new camcorders use the HDV tape format, which can record HD resolution video to regular MiniDV tapes. It looks like there might finally be some competition for the Sony FX1, which is the low-budget indie filmmakers' high-def camcorder of choice.

Photos: The touchscreen Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX500
Crave You'll need a tripod for that, mind, even if you do follow the Crave photography masterclass and improvise one out of a wine glass, some gaffer tape and a 1983 Blue Peter annual. We would walk 500 miles for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX500, and...

Photos: The history of the digital camera
Crave Black-and-white images were captured on a digital cassette tape, and viewing them required Sasson and his colleagues to develop a special screen. Although compacts were appearing in strange shapes, such as the Pentax EI-C90, which split into two...

Top ten obsolete ports
Crave There was a time when printers, scanners and even tape-backup devices used to hang off this port. Who chooses which ports make it, and which are shuffled off to the retirement home for the permanently disconnected?
