CeBIT 2007 brought plenty of opportunities to check out the latest developments in laptops.

This Asus laptop, which doesn't yet have a model name, is the successor to the company's R2H model and is one of a number of second-generation ultra-mobile PCs at the show. (The first generation of UMPCs debuted at last year's CeBIT.) The convertible device (from clamshell to tablet) has a 7-inch 800x480-pixel TFT screen and includes a camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS capabilities.

Samsung also brought out a new version of its UMPC, with high hopes for better sales this time round. The Samsung Q1 was one of the marquee products at CeBIT 2006, but it never really took off. "We targeted 100,000 units, but so far we didn't reach that target yet," Kyuho Uhm, Samsung's vice president of strategic marketing, said at a CeBIT news conference, according to the Reuters news agency.

This year, Samsung is trying its luck with the Q1 Ultra. The second-generation model reportedly sports a number of improvements -- in areas including the keyboard, battery life, wireless connectivity and screen quality -- along with GPS navigation capabilities, a mobile TV chip and two cameras, the company says. It is expected to go on sale in May for around £799.

The Asus W5Fe has an auxiliary SideShow display that integrates with Windows Vista. The SideShow display can be activated independently of the main system, providing a shortcut to information such as appointments, phone numbers, addresses and email messages. It can also be used to view photos and play music.

Asus is also showing a military-grade tablet PC. This IP54-compliant rugged laptop has a sunlight-readable, swiveling 13.3-inch touchscreen, a backlit keyboard, integrated Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g), Bluetooth and GPS, plus optional wireless WAN connectivity. It uses Intel's Core 2 Duo processor.

As is now traditional, Asus has a sleek-looking Lamborghini prominently displayed on its stand -- along with the latest models in its complementary line of laptop PCs.
