How does it work?

Powermat uses the principles of magnetic induction to wirelessly transmit electrical power via its ultra-thin mat to any Powermat-enabled electronic device placed on it - devices like your iPod, iPhone, Blackberry, GPS unit and handheld games console.

Powermat charges at the same speed or even faster than the actual charger provided with your device. What's more, multiple gadgets can be charged simultaneously using it. And because a single Powermat consumes considerably less energy than multiple individual chargers it's much kinder to the environment too.

Can I charge my existing gadgets using the Powermat?

To charge your devices via the Powermat, they need to be fitted with a Powermat receiver. We provide several ways to add a receiver to your existing gadgets. We have built Powermat receivers into cases for many popular devices.

We also offer power cubes that can work with multiple gadgets at the same time and we have docks for others. This means you can choose from a range of different options when you want to add Powermat capabilities to devices like iPhones, Blackberrys, handheld games consoles and more.

How many types of Powermat are there?

Initially there will be two versions of the Powermat available. The Home and Office model is designed to be used on a table or desk at work or around the house, while the Portable model is aimed at those who need a convenient way of charging their devices while they’re on the road.

Both models can charge up to three devices wirelessly at the same time. They also feature a USB port for charging extra devices via a cable. Next year Powermat will be introducing the larger Family model. This will allow you to wirelessly charge up to six devices at any one time and - like the current versions - includes a USB port.

How does the Powermat know when to charge my device?

The Powermat sends data back and forth between itself and the device to constantly monitor and regulate the power delivery. When a Powermat-enabled device is placed on the Powermat this data is used to:

  • Detect if there is a valid connection between the mat and the device.
  • Work out the existing level of power in the battery and the amount of power required by the device.
  • Identify which component in the Powermat should be activated to transfer the required power.

It is only after the Powermat has gathered this data that it starts to transfer power to your device. The Powermat system then continuously monitors the power level of each device on it and automatically discontinues power transfer to each device as and when that particular device's battery if full.
